My friends Ian and Tryg have left Beijing and moved on to Shanghai. In the second of these two photos Tryg took, he and Ian have become the center of attention in a cramped train car, where an old Chinese man has insisted on trying on Ian’s “cowboy” hat. (Ian is the one in the orange jacket.) When they arrived in Shanghai, the travelers were relieved to meet two other Americans at the hostel. One of the Americans is black, and his experiences in China contrast with those of the white Americans, as he encounters racism that is blatant and without pretense. Read Ian’s travel journal and see more of Tryg’s photos in their third China blog post, “Snippets from Shanghai”: http://sagewanders.blogspot.com/2011/11/snippets-from-shanghai.html Their blog is called Wander Sage.
